IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Verna
Slusser
August 9, 1939 – May 14, 2024
Verna Slusser was born in Salem West Virginia on August 9th, 1939, to Robert Lowe (Father) and Dorothy Cutright (Mother). Verna passed away on May 14, 2024. Verna moved with her family to Wichita from the Smoky Mountains of West Virginia as a small child. She attended North High School where she was active in sports. As an adult, she had many different occupations including law enforcement. After a lot of work and dedication, she qualified and became the first female commissioned to carry a firearm in the state of Kansas. She also worked for many years in social services including SRS Child Support Services, Fraud and Youthville. She was very dedicated to serving the children of the State of Kansas. She also spent many years being a Girl Scout leader. She met her life long best friend Peggy, a volunteering mother. Their friendship spanned over 4 decades. Peggy was by her side during her final days. Verna was a fun-loving outspoken spitfire of a woman who never met a stranger. She would give anyone her last dime and the shirt off her back if she thought they needed it. People were drawn to her and her infectious laugh. She loved to joke and tease, much to the embarrassment of her teenagers and grandkids who eventually grew to love and appreciate her silly sense of humor. These times were later referred to as "Mimaw moments".
Verna is survived by her daughter Misha Suffron (Bryan) and Deborah Huskey (Jamie), grandchildren Morgan Huskey Brown (Devin), Shelby Munoz (Matt), Wade Suffron (Tania), great grandchildren Rona, Wyatt, Arlen and Ilyra. Sister Sharon Kessler, brother Larry Baker as well as many other grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
She is preceded in death by her husband Frank Slusser, both parents, father Robert and Mother Dorothy. 2nd husband Robert Tarbutton, older sister Mary Sue, who raised her from age 9 after the loss of their parents, younger sister Karen, daughter Tammy and two sons Mike and Andy. Verna also leaves behind two of her greatest loves, her cat Ozzy Pawsborne (The Prince Of Darkness) and her cherished loving and most loyal companion, Lucy Lou, her chocolate lab, both of whom stayed by her side until her final end.
In all seriousness and silliness, Verna was the sort of person you would want in your corner backing you. She could usually be found taking up for the underdog and looking out for the less fortunate. She will forever be loved, missed, and remembered for being the wonderful person she was.
