Sonia Joy
Faust
February 21, 1936 – November 15, 2023
Born on February 21, 1936, to Willis John Hockett and Etheldra Murray Hockett. She peacefully departed us on November 15, 2023, of natural causes to spend eternity with her Lord and Savior. She is preceded by her brother Ralph Hockett, her daughter Etheldra Faust, and sister Lillian
Hockett- Barnett, and ex-husband Fred Faust of Jacksonville Florida. She leaves behind two sons Leslie Faust and Stanley Faust, and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews.
She was raised in Atchison Kansas and moved to Wichita Kansas in the 40's As a young girl she experienced farm life. Before starting her family. Sonia's church family includes Brotherhood Presbyterian Church and Saint Mark United Methodist Church. Her studies began at L'Overture Elementary School, Dunbar, and East High School. She would attend college at Wichita State University studying Home Making, Real Estate and furthermore at Friends University and Tabor College. Ultimately obtaining her master's degree in teaching.
Sonia found great joy in traveling and landed in San Francisco where she lived for many years. While working and making a life for herself she enjoyed the beaches and everything the area had to offer. She had many talents. To name a few, she enjoyed fashion and fashion shows.Cooking and culinary experiences and wine tasting. She definitely had a green thumb and spent much of her time growing flowers vegetables and herbs. She even took up upholstery. There was nothing she didn't want to learn about or experience. As a leader she taught at Coleman Jr. High and many others as a substitute. She took great pride in the education of all. She made lifelong friends and spoke to them often.
She had a great eye and was gifted at knowing how to live life to its fullest. Often, she made a habit of volunteering and providing those in need with her time and offerings. She honored her family and friends and spoke of them often. Growing up in her home meant enjoying home-made baked goods playing board games and there was never a lack of paper and books.
Health was important to Sonia. She was a walker. Many times, out-walking two generations with the expectation for us to follow.
Throughout her life she served as President of the Urban League here in Wichita Kansas and would spend many years serving the Golden Agers Club and Prided herself with her social accomplishments and joyed over the recognition of other's accomplishments as well. The Wichita Public Library has been a staple in her life. There was a book club that she loved, and her favorite Author is Zora Neal Hurston's "Their eyes were watching God".
As a grandmother, she led by example and her influence and patience lasted a lifetime. Everyday she taught what she had learned. Sonia would encourage and participate in exercise classes and never give up her fight when diagnosed with cancer, which remained in remission. I can remember her words of encouragement, "If its imp
