Maxine C. Stilger, 88, died Monday, January 18, 2010 after a long illness.
Maxine was born August 10, 1921 in Davison, Michigan, the only child of Bertha and Ernie Raizon. The family moved to Portland, Oregon a few years later where Maxine spent most of her childhood. In 1939, she graduated from Commerce High School, became employed, and bought her own home. While still in high school she met her future husband, William J. Stilger, and they were married December 7, 1940. In the ensuing years, she provided the home support for Bill in his Air Force and civilian careers, reared three children, enjoyed interior decorating, several crafts and hobbies, and played a lot of bridge. She lived her life without ambition for career, wealth, or fame, but with quiet faith, strength, willingness, and resourcefulness she focused not on the passing difficulties of daily situations, but on their more positive and fulfilling aspects. Her creative endeavors enriched our lives, serving as a model and inspiration. We are grateful.
The family thanks the Catholic Care Center for providing our mother excellent and loving care.
She was preceded in death last November by her husband of 68 years, William, and is survived by her children Lindi (George) Holmes of Lincoln, AR, Mary Jo (Mike) Gallagher and Jeff (Mabel) Stilger of Wichita; grandchildren Tim Dalmasso, Matt (Shelly) Stilger of Wichita, Jeremy (Gretchen) Puckett of Paonia, CO, and Rachel (Stephen) Davies of Fredericksburg, VA; great-grandchildren Ashlea, Amber, and Alex Dalmasso, Lydia Puckett, Caleb and Ainsley Stilger, Elizabeth, T.J., and Johnny Davies.
