Obituary of Larry Gene Mumford
Larry Gene Mumford, 79, son of Roland Mumford Sr. and Madeline Mumford departed from this life on Saturday, November 8 2025 surrounded by his loving family. Larry was born in Lawrence, Kansas on December 24, 1945 where he grew up with 9 siblings.
Larry attended Lawrence Public Schools; including Pinckney Elementary, Central Jr. High, and Lawrence High School. While in high school, Larry played high school football for the Lawrence Lions. Larry graduated from Lawrence High School in 1955.
After graduating high school, Larry moved to Wichita Kansas where attended Wichita University, earning a Bachelors of General Studies in 1974,
Larry married Deborah Thurman Washington on February 1, 1985 at Progressive Missionary Baptist Church. Larry and Deborah were happily married for 40 years, and from this union came 2 sons, John and Roland Mumford and 6 grandchildren. Larry had a tremendous heart for giving, and used every opportunity to minister to family and friends by spreading the Good News about his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Larry worked at Beech Aircraft as a machinist operator and expediter. He also worked at Cessna Aircraft as an aircraft assembler. One of his many interesting jobs was working at Coleman Company as a punch press operator, the YMCA and St. Joseph Hospital in housekeeping in 1974 He worked at Boeing Aircraft as a machine operator and a planner in the planning department. While at Boeing, Larry also attended Word of Life Bible College, graduating as class Valedictorian in 2008.
In 2005, he joined Spirit Aerospace, working with engineering drawing operator procedures, specifications, and technician orders in coordination with the manufacturing shop and planning department, He retired in 2008.
Larry especially loved watching KU and WSU games with family. He also enjoyed watching the UConn Women's basketball team as well as fishing with his sons, brother, and grandson.
Larry was well known for making family videos, playing chess, watching a good western movie, and participating in the Men's Fellowship and Breakfast.
Larry was an Elder at 316 Church where he led men's fellowship through discussion, and he created a men's devotional for first time Christians to use as a study guide. He also loved leading people to the Lord, and encouraging them to read their Bibles.
Favorite memories of Larry include riding bikes, the trips to Universal Studios, walking the Chisholm Trail, making homemade popcorn, working on home repairs, his cool Corvette, and the church trips to the beach in the California Grand Canyon, and the 4th of July celebrations at the park in Lawrence, Kansas.
Remaining to cherish Larry's memory are his wife Deborah of Wichita, Kansas; sons John Mumford of Wichita Kansas and Roland Mumford of Wichita Kansas, 6 grandchildren; sister Claudette Lawson, of Wichita Kansas; brothers Jerry Mumford and Danny Mumford of Wichita Kansas; Ronald Mumford and Will Mumford of Lawrence Kansas, and a host of nieces and nephews, family and friends.
