Obituary

Thomas, Judith Kay, a hardworking, kindhearted person who touched the lives of the countless people she knew, died Monday after a valiant battle with lung cancer. Judy never complained about her illness and always put her faith in the Lord. Judy was born in Saffordville, Kansas to Robert and Evelyn Nurnberg. She leaves a rich and loving legacy with her two sons, Kenneth "Brian" Mann and Robert Jason Thomas; her daughter, Bonita Kay Thomas and three grandchildren. She is preceded in death by twin babies, Timothy Ray Thomas and Tanya Kay Thomas. Her son, Brian, and daughter, Bonita both reside in the Wichita area. Judy's son Robert resides in Lawton, Oklahoma. Her three grandchildren include Tre', Caden, Ryleigh. Judy was the fourth of twelve children. Most of her remaining ten siblings live in Kansas. Baby, Judy's feisty little chiweenie dog, brought her joy. Although she was a tiny dog, Judy once joked, "Baby rules our house." Judy got her first job at age fifteen and worked for 56 years in all kinds of hobs before her illness required her to retire in 2012. In her earlier years, she worked in various locations including upstate New York, Miami, Florida, Indianapolis, and Alaska. Throughout her illustrious career in the restaurant industry, she did everything from serving to being a manager and an owner. Most recently, Judy spent 16 years at the Wal-Mart store in Wichita working overnight stocks, in the Pharmacy section as well as in Health and Beauty products. She also worked as a waitress at Ryan's and then Home Town Buffet, where she gained a loyal following among the many customers she served over the years. When she was diagnosed with cancer, her Wal-Mart colleagues sent a giant get well card signed by more than 40 people who are part of the "Wal-Mart 1221 Family." It was signed by the store managers, other Wal-Mart co-associates, and new hires who respected her work ethic and her friendly personality. The same was true about her second job at Hometown Buffet. Many regular customers would request to be seated in Judy's section. One of her favorite things was to have Saturday night dinner with her grandson Tre' and Miss Bernice. Then they would have frozen custard at Freddie's on Sunday. She would have dinner with Tre' almost every Monday night. Her oldest son, Brian, remembers that during the Christmas Holiday season Judy would buy gloves, hats, and coats for other children less fortunate than her own. But she never thought of herself as a Good Samaritan." I treated people the way I wanted to be treated," Judy once said. A viewing will be held on Thursday, April 11 from 4 pm to 8 pm at Old Mission Mortuary in Wichita. A graveside service will be held at Grandview Cemetery on Friday, April 12.
