John R. McCarrier, 84, passed away on March 16, 2024. He was born in Midland, TX on July 15, 1939 to Wayne & Audrey McCarrier.
John attended North High School in Wichita, KS and graduated in 1957. John held many state records for the shot put and discus, but then never bragged or spoke about his accomplishments. He had a short career with the fire department then decided to join the army. John spent three years in the army, 20th Engineer Battalion Lieutenant, mostly serving in Germany during the Vietnam War. When John returned to the states he began a career as a postal worker which lasted for 43 years.
Above all, John was devoted to his family. He had a passion for exercise and loved playing golf. He was a quiet, humble man who will be missed by those who knew him and loved him.
He is preceded in death by his parents and sister, Margaret Updegrove, (McCarrier) his wife, Wanda, and sons Eric and Alex. He is survived by his niece Jana Epperly, loving companion of 20 years Ramona Mirt, as well as numerous friends and family members. Graveside service will be held on March 23rd at Old Mission Cemetery, location Faith, Section C, at 1:00pm. Family and friends are invited to gather afterwards at Willowbend Clubhouse from 2:00-4:00pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in John's honor to HumanKind Ministries at Humankindwichita.org. 829 N. Market, Wichita, KS 67214.
