Obituary

Iva Deloris "Dot" Peterman passed away peacefully on June 21, 2026, at Azria Health in Wichita, Kansas, at the age of 96.

Dot was born on May 16, 1930, in Wichita, Kansas, to Raymond and Iva Brown. The youngest of nine children, she grew up in Wichita and proudly graduated from North High School in 1948. Shortly after graduation, she began working at Pierce's Thriftway, where she advanced from cashier to bookkeeper and remained a dedicated employee for more than 30 years until the store closed.

On November 30, 1952, Dot married the love of her life, William "Bill" Peterman. Together they shared 47 wonderful years of marriage until Bill's passing in 1999. Early in their marriage, they lived in California and Washington before returning to Wichita, where they raised their four children and built a home centered on faith, hard work, and family. Together, Dot and Bill spent countless hours traveling and researching their genealogy, leaving behind a documented family history for future generations to cherish.

Dot's greatest passion was baking. Known by many as a professional cake decorator, she created everything from elegant wedding cakes to homemade candies. She and Bill shared a dream of opening "Dot's Sugar Shop." What began as a small pull-behind trailer grew into a counter space inside the GEM Store, then expanded to a storefront in Goddard, where they purchased a Daylight Donut franchise. With continued success, they returned to Wichita and opened Dot's Sugar Shop at Harry and Seneca. Her love of baking continues through her family today.

After Bill's passing, Dot found comfort and fellowship reconnecting with her church family at Bethany United Methodist Church. She could often be found in the kitchen helping with fundraising events, especially the beloved homemade chicken noodle dinners that brought the congregation together.

Another of Dot's cherished talents was quilting. No one knows exactly how many quilts she made over the years, but her handiwork touched generations. Her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and countless family friends were all blessed to receive one of her lovingly crafted quilts.

Dot was preceded in death by her husband, William "Bill" Peterman; her son, Darrell Peterman; and her four brothers and four sisters.

She is survived by her children, Kent Peterman (Debbie) of Oak Point, Texas; Karen Hoffman (Tom) of Wichita, Kansas, Raylund Peterman (Jana) of Wichita, Kansas, along with 10 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and many cherished nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.

Dot will be remembered for her generous heart, unwavering devotion to family, remarkable work ethic, and the love she poured into every cake, candy, quilt, and meal she made. Her legacy lives on in the traditions she started, the family she cherished, and the countless lives she touched.

Graveside services will be held on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Wichita Park Cemetery located at Hillside and 21 Street. Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance and celebration of a life well lived.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Dot to Bethany United Methodist Church, 1601 S. Main Street, Wichita, KS 67213
