Obituary

Freda Dorlene Smith was born January 7, 1938 to Emmett Arthur Keller and Verlie Faye (Leatherman) Keller in Pratt, Kansas and departed this life to her eternal home in Heaven on March 3, 2026 in Wichita, Kansas, at the age of 88.

After she finished school, Freda married Carl Eugene Mercer, they made their home in Wichita as they began their lives together and to this union were born two sons, Charles and Gary. After Eugene’s passing, Freda married Clarence E. “Bill” Smith and they spent over 30 years together until Bill’s passing in 2021. To Freda’s delight, she gained many children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews when she married Bill.

Throughout her life, Freda worked in the medical profession. She worked at several Doctor’s offices as a billing specialist . She later worked for Wesley Medical Center, as a ward clerk and nurses aide, where she made such a lasting impression they gave her an Honorary Wesley Ambassador award.

Freda was a strong Christian woman, who attended church faithfully, until her health no longer permitted her to attend. As her siblings were passing away, Freda would often state that she was ready to join her family in heaven. Freda enjoyed passing the time with painting apps on her phone and doing crossword puzzles. She looked forward to each Friday morning as she had a standing appointment with her beauty operator to have her hair done. She loved watching the Wichita State Shockers basketball games, collecting salt and pepper shakers and watches; however, Freda’s greatest joy came from spending time with her great granddaughters. On Friday evening’s Freda could be found in her kitchen making dinner for her Granddaughter Danielle, and her three oldest Great Grandchildren, Jillian, Allison and Brooklyn. The girls would often spend the night and have popsicles in bed with Grandma.

Freda is survived by her son, Gary Mercer and his wife Annette, one brother Buddy Keller, Granddaughter Danielle Colligan and her fiance, Aaron Julius, Grandson Doug Mercer and his wife, Julie, Granddaughter Deborah Mercer, six great grandchildren, Jillian, Allison and Brooklyn, Jordyn, Luna and Willow. Freda is also survived by her stepson, David Smith, as well as many step grandchildren and great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

Freda is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Eugene, her second husband Bill, her much loved 15 siblings and one son, Charles Mercer.
