Della Mae Matthies (Unruh) was born to Peter and
Bertha Unruh and grew up in Goessel, Kansas. Della passed away
May 18, 2023 after a long illness. She was 95 years old.
Della met "Mout" Matthies at Bethel College and they married in
1951. They had five children who all loved her dearly. After their
first child was born, Della quit her social work position to be a full-time
mom, and after their youngest was nine years old, began
child care in her home. She served several families over a 24
year career. Della's love for her children, grandchildren, and great-
grandchildren was obvious to all that knew her. And their love for her
was without bounds. After her retirement from daycare, and the death
of her husband, Della enjoyed many years of volunteer work at Harry
Hynes Hospice.
Della is survived by daughter Kristin Schmidt (Peabody, KS), son Mark
Matthies (Littleton, CO), son Scott Matthies (Chaplin, CT),
daughter Jo Bauer (Wichita, KS) and eleven grandchildren
and four great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by husband Eugene "Mout" Matthies,
daughter Janelle Fischer, and grandson Alan Schmidt.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 24, 2023 at Lorraine Avenue Mennonite Church, 655 S Lorraine St, Wichita, Kansas. Share tributes online at
