David LeRoy Sumpter, 84 went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, February 21, 2017 at home surrounded by his family.
David was survived by Lois Sumpter, his wife of 62 years. They had 4 children: David Michael Sumpter; Kathy Wallace; Dorothy Kralicek; and Vernon Sumpter all of Wichita. He also had 2 beloved sisters, Wanda Mitchell of South Carolina and Carol Hirsh of Wichita. David and Lois were blessed with 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
David grew up in Wichita and joined the Marines in1952. He served 4 years with one tour of duty in Japan during the Korean War.
After he was discharged he returned to Wichita where he married Lois on Jan. 22nd 1955. He worked as a mechanic through the years and retired from The Sedgwick Co. Motor Pool in July of 2000.
After his retirement he and his wife lived at Woodland Shores for 10 years where he spent his time fishing on Grand Lake with his cronies. They returned to their home in Wichita for the remainder of his life.
David was a generous and compassionate man and was always willing to help anyone in any that he could. It was often said that "he would give a stranger the shirt off his back".
