Darrell M. Nielsen, of Kansas City, Missouri, formerly of Springfield, South Dakota,
passed away on Tuesday, November 14 th , 2023.
Darrell was born in Audubon, Iowa on October 10 th , 1937, to Harry Charles and Lillie
Sophia (Madsen) Nielsen. He was married to Joan Elaine (Draper) Nielsen on
September 9 th , 1967, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Wichita, KS. They had 3 children.
Darrell first attended the one-room Rosehill Country School, and then graduated from
Audubon High School in 1956. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, where
he served as a geodetic surveyor in Germany for three years locating radar sites.
In 1965, he graduated from the Missouri University of Science and Technology (formerly
the School of Mines) in Rolla, Missouri with a degree in Civil Engineering. For the next
37 years, Darrell worked in the consulting engineering field and for the Federal
Government. He was a licensed professional engineer in Colorado, Nebraska, Iowa,
and Alaska. He spent nine enjoyable years in Alaska and moved to Springfield, South
Dakota in 2002 after his retirement.
Darrell is preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Janis Iola (Nielsen) Lustgraaf, his
sister-in-law, Joyce Ilene (Draper) Davis, and his son-in-law, John Robert DeSotel.
In addition to his wife, Joan Nielsen, of Kansas City, Missouri, Darrell is survived by his
children, Aimee (John) DeSotel of Kansas City, Missouri, Christopher and Nicole (Healy)
Nielsen of Fishers, Indiana, Erik Nielsen (Sebastian Solle) of Heiligenhaus, Germany,
grandchildren, Jarod William Nielsen and Lillie Anne Nielsen, and numerous other
family members.
The family will direct memorials, or you can give to a charity of your choice in Darrell's
name.
