IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Claud Jacob
Dewitt
June 10, 1920 – February 17, 2020
Claud was born in Ransom, Kansas to Gertrude and Claud DeWitt, Sr. on June 10, 1920. He had three sisters, Elaine, Ruth, and Joan, all of whom have preceded him in death. He spent his early years in Ransom, moving to Kinsley, Kansas in 1930, graduating from Kinsley High School in 1938.
Claud and Esther met in school, but did not begin dating until after their graduation. They were married on June 21, 1941. They had three children Donald, Carol, and Scott. The family lived in Dodge City and Hutchinson before moving to Wichita. In 1957, they moved into their home on Emerson, where they lived until moving into Compassionate Care West, where he lived his final 8 years.
Claud enlisted in the U.S. Army and served as a member of the 320th Medical Battalion of the 95th Infantry Division during World War II. He went overseas in 1944, spending a year and a half in Europe, and receiving a commendation from General Patton.
Claud is remembered for being a kind-hearted family man with an ornery streak. He will always be remembered for his love of family, generosity, and his sense of humor. He was truly a friend to all and was always willing to help someone in need. These same qualities can be found in his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Claud is survived by his three children, Don DeWitt, Carol Bacon (Tom), and Scott DeWitt (Janna) all of Wichita; grandchildren, Deirdre Newcomer (Brad) of Overland Park, Nicole Cox (Aaron), Kimberly Gilchrist (Jeff), Zach DeWitt (Julie),and David Bacon (Marci) all of Wichita; great grandchildren, Brenden, Logan, and Ashley Newcomer, Caity and Braeden Morris, Dylan Cox, Abby, Lizzy, and Jo DeWitt, Jayden, Jackson, and Joshua Gilchrist, Kaitlyn and Dylan Shaw, Morgan Bacon. He was preceded in death by his wife, Esther, daughter in law Margaret DeWitt, and great grandchild Lucas Bacon.
