Obituary

Carl E. Wright was born March 5, 1937 in Boynton, Oklahoma to the late Beatrice and Lawrence Wright. At an early age he accepted Christ and united with the Old Agency Baptist Church in Muskogee, Oklahoma.

Carl's family moved to Muskogee, OK, where he attended school at Sadler Elementary, Douglas Middle School, and Manuel High School. Carl was a gifted student, and was involved in many school activities, especially music, art and was technically literate, often performing duties for the teachers and administrators. Carl could operate any and all machines, projectors, and was a true artist.

While in high school, Carl formed his band with his brothers, and began playing locally for all kinds of events in the community. This started him on his life passion of traveling and playing with the band wherever they were called.

Carl's life story could never be told without including his helpmate and wife, Gloria. They were married on December 20, 1957. To this union, two daughters were born, Sherri and Beverly.

Carl, Gloria and the band soon moved to Dallas, Texas where he continued to play, pursuing his musical career. Carl and Gloria's house was known as the practice house for the band.

In 1959, Carl and Gloria relocated to Wichita, KS, where he continued with the band, performing in many night clubs, and backing major recording artists when they played in Wichita. He was sought out for his talent on the organ. His travels took him to many states, where the band performed. Carl started playing the piano, then teaching himself and taking lessons to play the Precision Base, and B2 Hammond Organ.

Carl began to play his music for Christ, and soon started playing for local churches. He played for Shiloh, Mizpah, New Zion, Strangers Rest, Church of God in Christ, Grant Chapel, and traveled to Bethel AME in Winfield, KS. Carl loved to play for the Lord, and sung his praise everywhere he went. He took his playing seriously, he could not miss a Sunday playing, even if he was out of town, he had a job to do, and he would travel back to do it, no matter where he was. He said, "I am working for the Lord, and I have a job to do".

Carl always had a smile on his face, even tempered, and was always willing to help others. He carried love in his heart, and never failed to help anyone he came in contact with.

Carl finished his race in this life on January 17, 2013. He was greeted in Heaven by his mother, Beatrice and father, Lawrence; brothers, Lawrence Jr., Homer and Maurice; a sister, Bernice; and an infant great granddaughter, Angel. He leaves to cherish his memory, a devoted wife, Gloria; daughters, Sherri (Jerry) Wesley and Beverly (Simmie) Barnes; sister, Wilma Jean Lollis of Muskogee, OK; brother, Calvin M. Wright; sisters-in-law, Lucille of Muskogee, Ok and Gracine of Kansas City, KS; uncle, Albert (Victoria) Howell of Grandview, MO; five grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; in-laws; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many other relatives and the Church families of Grant Chapel AME of Wichita and Bethel AME Church of Winfield, KS.
